Been a long time for Hearts Of Stone.Maybe they pull it out in New London.Going down on Amtrak, since driving 100 miles is still iffy with the leg.Hit a football pool for a nice chunk of change last sunday night,so I`m making up for missing the Bull Run show last week.It will be strange seeing the boys without Steve.Real old school set would be nice.

I had a real "circle of life" moment last night when I got to take my oldest son to his first Los Lobos show.

I've been following the band since the late 80s when I saw them open for U2 and the Dead and then continued seeing them in the NYC area through the 90s. As often is the case, when my wife and I moved out the burbs and started a family, I no longer had the resources to see them live.

My oldest son, Jackson, is 15 and in the past year or so has become passionate about music. He's grown his hair out, learned to play bass and has spent practically every waking moment listening to everything from classic rock to punk to metal to grunge.

Los Lobos doesn't come to Long Island too often and when they do, it's often in support of other bands. So when I saw they'd be headlining a show not too far from our house, I asked Jackson if he wanted to go. I was quite pleased when he gave an enthusiastic "yes."

The show itself was a bit of a mixed bag. Unfortunately, no Steve, so Jackson wasn't going to get the full LL experience. And Cesar was having problems with the sound throughout, to the point where he stopped playing on some songs (I don't know enough about sound engineering, but it seemed like the monitor set-up was the problem. He complained several times about how awful it sounded and thanked the audience for their understanding at the end. The one positive byproduct was more solos from Louie.)

I thought several of the songs were pretty rough around the edges, but I haven't seen them in almost 20 years and I've become pretty rough around the edges myself in that time.

Jackson's personal highlight was "Don't Keep Me Wondering" as he's recently discovered the Allman Brothers. For me, the band really began to swing during an impromptu "Farmer John."

So while the show itself might not have been perfect, getting to experience it with my son certainly was.

I'm about to start a separate post about this show, but wanted to point out it's actually a movie theater from the 1920s that was saved from demolition and turned into a music venue. Just some local trivia  :)

Wolf/ Shakin/Emily/chucos /tin can/don't worry/down the line/wicked rain/hearts of stone/don't keep me wondering/farmer john/mas y mas. Encore: oh my head-lets go-la bamba-good lovin-la bamba. A nice bluesy 90 minute set from the boys. Venue is a big place with high ceiling. I guess  a converted warehouse. So it took a big sound to fill it up. Caesar was quite talkative tonight and getting the Long Island crowd going. Very friendly staff was a plus.   On to Tarrytown NY and the legend of Sleepy Hollow!!!!

For those of you from the SF Bay area who are considering the Crystal Bay show but are unsure of the weather conditions in February there is a solution. You can take the Amtrak from Emeryville to Truckee for a very reasonable rate. From Truckee there is a bus that will drop you off right across from the casino. I've done this and it's very easy. Here is a link to the Tahoe transportation service. Check for the winter schedule.

the night before in Las Vegas at the Golden Nugget

And if anyone wants a front row center seat, I got your ticket right here.

You need to learn to take your finger off the mouse before you click that BUY button... do what I do... take a deep breath, and wait...

Hellpups- I have never been shy about being the village idiot. You are correct -- I don't even like going to Vegas any more....I guess I'll see how well Sin City's Craigslist works....  ???

I never said you were an idiot and as a matter of fact you are in my speed dial for the inevitable day when I get arrested... Craigslist Vegas should be interesting to say the least... I suggested Crystal Bay in February to the "Boss" and she just rolled her eyes at me...
