Title: On the lookout for the Fillmore
Post by: Annette Bassett on June 20, 2017, 11:37:41 pm
Hoping someone has an inside track on a Fillmore date for this year. I realize that announcement is still a few months off. (Looks like they tend to come in September.) But Mando said they'd be doing it, and I was hoping to do a CA trip for my  :o :o 60th birthday in October. But I can probably wait until December.

Although, as 'pups has said, there's always Hardly Strictly, if the boys are playing it. But I think the Fillmore will offer the best Lobos experience.

Unless something comes up assume the first two weeks in December as possible dates... that's been the pattern at least...

and who knows about Hardly Strictly... they seem to be a favorite of the festival and they've played twice now... also they're friends of Boz and it is his booking agent who picks the bands (she does the booking for Great America Music Hall and Slims)... but you never know... I thought they were going to come back last year but they ended up doing Sound Summit instead... bear in mind they play the area a lot so I'm guessing they are mindful (as are the venues and promoters) not to over saturate, plus a lot of times the contracts make clear they can't play any other venue within a certain distance or time etc. That said I'd love to see them there again... the tore the place down the last time and had one of the very few encores I've seen at the festival... the crowd simply would not let them leave (granted Crack was egging them on from the side of the stage)...

I heard unsubstantiated rumors that last year might be the last one for the Fillmore but I don't think that's the case... the last three years where they've had no opener have been some of the best shows I've seen and the band seems to love every minute of it... My recommendation is do the December show and then give yourself a few days to enjoy the SF area you know so well... You've earned it...

A one night stand...  :P

It's been that way for three years now and I'm not expecting it to change, but you can always put a worm in the man's ear...

On the bright side it's relatively the same bang for the buck since there's no opener and it's an evening with... may I suggest to sweeten the deal we all consider some get together the day after, a formal party (I'll host if folks are willing to come to the East Bay) or something less formal... maybe we can induce some of our musical heroes to stick around and glow in our admiration (if they're not already sick of us)... You just never know when that last Fillmore show will happen so strike while the hammer is hot...

Annette, I like how you think -- And your calendaring style.
My therapist only schedules twice a year: Jan-June and then July-Dec.  :hmmm:

I try to do the same with my show calendars.

I'm gonna guess 12/8/17 for the FeelMo show.....and you MUST come  :yahoo:

Hey Pups...what about Livermore...just a hop skip and jump from Altamont!  >:D

Actually, Livermore is just over the "hill" for us, which means it is ridiculously close, but it's a pricey gig (tickets start at $121) and they are sandwiched between two bands (granted Dwight, whom I rather like, is headlining), so I'm thinking maybe they'll get an hour long set in... if that... kinda bummed but the winery shows has a lot of drawbacks including super douchey crowds...

I was considering begging Crack to take me along but after our last crazy ride I'm not so sure he'd be keen on that...plus I'd have to ask the Man to squeeze me in and I have a really low threshold for rejection...

Oh, and it's a school night and I work on Mars... ain't happening...

I'm checking flights, but can't get very far since no date has been announced. Nothing scheduled on the Fillmore site for any weekend in December yet, so that's no help. Has it been a Friday or Saturday the last few years?

Any of those first three weekends of December are doable, i think. If they wait until the weekend before Christmas, as they did at least one year, it's game over for me. So i really hope that doesn't happen.

And dear Yanet, I'm delighted to hear you and John are coming, but I'm still going to see you in SD anyway. :)

It will be a wonderful treat to see all of you, and hopefully it will work out.

PS I hope all of you Cali folks go see Cafe Tacvba in September or October - they're playing all over the state, and I'm jealous.

Cafe Tacuba FTW! Oakland 9/15, you betcha'!  :)

I think I'm placing my Fillmore bet at 12/8, although 12/1 could happen.

Can't wait to see you, Annette!!

according to Pollstar

Friday 12/8 = Laredo Tx
Sunday 12/9 = Chicago Winery run starts

Friday 12/15 = Pawling, NY
Saturday 12/16 = Norfolk, CT

nothing so far on 12/1 or 2

and 12/1 and 12/2 are still open on the Fillmore calendar... so it's gonna be one of those dates... last two years it landed on the Friday of the first week of December so I'm guessing 12/1... start packing your bag folks...

I've also heard that it's 12/2 for sure. So time to plan...

Here's my next question: they're not scheduled between mid-November and 12/10, when they start City Winery in Chicago. Based on previous years, etc., what do you think the chances are that they'll do another California show either right before or after the Fillmore? If I can get in more than one show on the trip, that'd be perfect.

Thin... just a guess... at least not in the immediate area... maybe I'm wrong but I don't recall them doing another show in the area after the Fillmore gig... years ago we went to see them in Redding the night before but that was a pretty long drive... if you are lucky they might do another Moe's show in Santa Cruz... bear in mind their contract with Fillmore might include "non-compete" clauses where they can't perform within a certain distance or within a certain period of time... They also saturate the area during the year so it might not make sense for them (not to brag, but I've passed on multiple shows this year that were technically within driving distance of where I live... Just can't make them all, especially on school nights... I'm missing a solo David gig and a LL show in a couple of weeks because they coincide with another show I'm going to and I just don't have the time/money/energy... granted I'm flying to LA at the end of the month to see them do a Kiko show)

FWIW Santa Cruz and Petaluma are both just outside of LiveNation's Fillmore no-compete radius

i bring a lot less gear into the Fillmore than i used to..that haul back to the truck after load out gets more brutal the older i get
this time around i'll probably bring the 414s + Tascam DR680II (6-channels in) + cables for the AKGs & FOH feed
might bring the streaming rig if i'm feeling super ambitious

Looks more like a "community center" kind of location... the guy who promotes there is a local businessman and a serious Deadhead... This is a big deal for him because usually it's second/third tier jam bands that play the place... it's definitely going to be a very hippie dippy crowd... BTW it looks like tickets are still available... I'm guessing this is sort of a pricey show for this space...

i'm going to just mention that you guys shouldn't sleep on the Auburn show
i've never been, but apparently the venue is not a typical 'event center'
locals are telling me that this is a small and greasy place that is perfect for a Friday night LL gold country throwdown

They better be prepared for the Invasion Of The Golden Horde....   :vevil:

"Turn me on dead man."  Best line I'd heard come from the stage in years. Thanks to Crack's excellent recording of last year's show, I get to relive that moment forever.

I'm on board for the Fillmore show. Hope to see you all.

Dave
