Anyone ever cover a Lobos tune live?
« on: November 17, 2007, 12:09:15 pm »
When I was playing out with my band, we routinely played "I Can't Understand" and Cesar's version of "You've Got to Lose" (Ike Turner song).  Both songs always went over quite well.

What other tunes have you had success with?

I don't know if I'd call it a "success" but many moons ago, I played in a band that covered "The Hardest Time."

My band plays several songs from the Los Lobos/Super Seven catalog. Some of the favorites are: Luz de mi Vida, Maria Cristina, Evangeline and Wanna Be Like You. One of my favorites that we only did for one gig was LS7's "Calle Dieceseis". It was for a big gig that featured several horn players and we arranged it as the intro for the horns and brought them in at the end and built to an incredible climax. It was a great tune to introduce a 5 piece horn section with, playing that Am-G-F-E line.

I have been involved in a few projects that covered some of the Veracruz stuff (La Guacamaya, La Morena, El Canelo...etc.) - along with La Pistola, Que Nadie Sepa Mi Sufrir. and of course, Cumbia Raza!!  I guess some of these are covers of covers...
Great fun!!

I played in a group that did mostly latin acoustic folk, and we did a cover of "Saint Behind the Glass."  The harpist just absolutely nailed his part.  I played jarana and sang lead on that one.

Covered This Time, That Train Dont Stop..., I Cant Understand and Chuco's Cumbia.  These were unfamiliar to the rest of the band.  Now they're staples.  Would like to do Viking.  Dose does a smokin version.

I think Real Time Frequency Modulation (RTFM) a group of software guys who jammed about once a month played "Let's Say Goodnight" once or twice about 15 years ago.  I contributed blues harp and vocal stylings, prompted to get up with them one night when adequately lubricated to sing "Dead Presidents" and that was my start.
