"hidalguera"

Hi All -

I've seen David credited with playing a "custom-designed 'hidalguera'" in a few places.

Sounds fascinating. Anybody know what that is or have info in general?

¡Muchas gracias!

It's the instrument he plays on "Teresa" and "Guantanamera" among many others. It has 8 strings in four courses. Don't recall tuning. I've seen one that I think that is a modified Harmony acoustic and then I've seen one that's make out of what looks like a Danelectro. Voodoostrat might recall more details or I might dig out my old Guitar Player mags.

Dave shares a little bit of the history at the 2:44 mark.

Oh, so THAT's how they get that sound! I recognized it instantly in that Saint Behind the Glass version.

Aside from the Teresa and Guantanamera mentioned, it's all over La Pistola y El Coraz├│n.

I've seen David play the Harmony live several times but always just assumed it was a traditional Mexican instrument (I don't know all of them).

Thanks for solving a 40-year old mystery for me! It's a fascinating idea.

I've attached the only online photo of the Danelectro that I could dig up online, as well as some info I got from a guy on Instagram who was able to explain it for me.

I have some pics of his current 'Teresa' guitar from earlier this year, let me dig em up and I'll post em soon. I will ask DH for more details next time I see him.
