Covers album with LA Tunes!
« on: February 27, 2020, 01:23:41 am »
Okay-  Dave says that the band is doing a covers album of LA tunes!!  What would you put on the list?

I have always wanted to hear them do Zappa's "Trouble Comin' Every Day" (aka the Watts Riots song) with Cesar doing the vocal.

if we’re going Zappa I choose The Orange County Lumber Truck

Beverly Hills / Circle Jerks
LA Blues / Lightning Hopkins (or The Stooges I guess)
Creeping Coastline Of Lights / Leaving Trains
Men’s Room, LA / Kinky Friedman
Goin’ Out West / Tom Waits
O’er The Town Of Pedro / fIREHOSE
Hollywood Hills / Beat Farmers
History Lesson Part 2 / Minutemen
I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts / X (w/ Dave mentioning his LA peers from the Slash days)

this is just off the top of my head
I could sit here for days with this reply

L.A. Freeway - Guy Clark
Carmelita - Warren Zevon (I'm imagining a version like the Dwight Yoakam/Flaco Jimenez take on Flaco's "Partners" album)

Dave Alvin has some songs that would be a good fit for the band: "Hollywood Bed" from his days with the Blasters and "California Snow" from his 1998 album "Blackjack David." The latter is a co-write with Tom Russell, another California native.

She said "Why don't you come over to my place? There's nobody home". So I went over to her place... There was nobody home...

Fuck this shit of covering L.A.bands.The greatest recording that Los Lobos could do of covers is to record with Barrence Whitfield. This guy is the only way to improve the band vocally.Nobody in the band,as wonderfully as they sound collectively, can do that James Brown howl that Barrence does. You die hards out there do realize that Barrence has had a FUCKING HUGE INFLUENCE ON THE GUYS.Georgia Slop was on an early Barrence album that made  a huge  impression on this amazing band. Its stunning how lucky I`ve been to think of this shit, and realize how  stunningly great this band is,Barrence gets 6/7 songs, the  boys get 7/8 tunes. I would be amazed if the guys didn`t get a couple originals inserted.Look what they did with `Christmas and you`Brilliant shit.

One of the reasons that I started to travel and catch LL in some truly amazing places, over the years was the the difference in encores. Some of the songs I saw in encores over time out west, made me realize that this band enjoys where they are performing. The friendship with Barrence wasn`t apperant right off the bat,but its quite clear now.The true diehards need to travel to the northeast, and see the Band performing with the one singer that can transform this into a truly stunning experience.
